Giordano Bruno was an Italian Renaissance monk, philosopher, and poet. He was a contemporary of Galileo Galilei. Bruno's conviction that the stars were actually other suns with inhabited worlds did not sit well with the scientific dogma of the day, nor did his avid support for Copernicus' controversial theory that the earth revolved around the sun. Bruno was burned at the stake in 1600 by the Inquisition, an event that did not go unnoticed by Galileo, who faced the Inquisition in 1632 and recanted.

Although many changes have occurred in the reigning scientific paradigm over the ensuing centuries, there are still topics and theories that conventional science considers heresy.
